Softly he treads, moccasin adorned feet padding quietly down an unseen trail. He pauses on occasion to light his pipe, or listen to the calls of the birds. Hands seasoned from years of this experience, he moves on, the wind worn face constantly turning to watch his surroundings. Slung from one shoulder he carries an oilcloth bag packed with his simple, yet most precious tools; cooking kettle, a blanket rolled up into a bundle, striker and stone for his fire, a few strips of jerky, a ball of tobacco, and other small possibles. Though few in number are these items, all ease his trek through the wilderness, through his open home.

    There, a small stream, clear and unpolluted bubbles by a lone white spruce; home for the night. He clears back the duff and uses his belt axe to expertly split dead cedar limbs for his kindling. Trained from his times alone in the bush, his open home, he raises his steel striker and brings it down upon the shard of stone. Sparks fly and are caught by his tinder. Coaxing it slowly, almost affectionately, he breathes this tinder to life, to flame. The hungry tongues of the fire flick and consume the cedar wood, raising an atmosphere unchanged for centuries. He dips his kettle into the stream, and with a few well placed sticks, heats the water for his tea. He unfurls his blanket, draping it gently across the forest floor, under the spruce which shall be his roof for the night. Chewing quietly on the dried meat from his pack, he looks out over the woodland, his open home, and awaits his warm peaceful night...

    This small moment, is something felt only by a choice few people in recent years. Yet, it was the daily life of our Canadian forefathers, both non-Native and Native alike.
